The 80’s were a decade that saw affluence spreading to the masses. People celebrated on a much grander scale. Event weddings were becoming more of a trend as Brides and Grooms wanted to have sophistication and style added to their reception and not just their ceremony. Live music at parties, once thought to be stuffy and pretentious, was given a fun and entertaining make-over by having bands play the latest hits, full of horns and lots of energy. This was the environment where the Sid Miller Orchestra emerged.
Sid Miller, the founder, was just coming off of an impressive tour with his multicultural, world-beat band, Siembra. Through conversations with a close friend who was in the wedding entertainment industry, Sid became interested in the idea of taking his band, Siembra, and offering it for private party entertainment. Although Siembra was enjoying success, the idea of shaking up the cottage industry of wedding reception entertainment became much more intriguing.
Sid began to assemble the components of his upscale private party band. His determination to present only the best in musical entertainment, as well as his drive for excellence, created a fabulous group of professional musicians. This group consisted of individuals from various musical backgrounds and was the first ethnically mixed private party band in the Philadelphia area. It included Ted Baker, who later became the keyboardist with Steely Dan, Richard Lee Steacker, guitarist with Grover Washington, Jr. and Nicole Morris, who starred in “Dream Girls”.
Deciding that the name, Sid Miller Orchestra, best represented what he had to offer, he went on to book many wedding receptions in 1980’s. It became quickly evident that this was something special, as the Sid Miller Orchestra enjoyed continued success for the rest of the decade.
What began to separate the Sid Miller Orchestra from the rest of the bands in the industry was the versatility they displayed. Switching seamlessly from genre, to genre, Sid lead his band to a higher level of entertainment, and the creation of fabulous parties for thousands of guest in the 80's.
